Welcome to North Baltimore Mennonite Church! North Baltimore is a gathering of people who are becoming one another’s family in the city. There are some locals here, but many of us grew up someplace other than Baltimore. We are a church of young adults, young families, and the young at heart. Together we are learning what it means to love each other, as we serve our neighbors in this city and beyond.

1. A Little History

Our church was begun in 1986 by two couples; Robert and Ruby Lehman, and Frank and Evelyn Nice. Frank served as the first pastor. From the beginning small Bible study and support groups have been an important part of the congregation’s life. Today, eight groups meet on various nights during the week. They welcome newcomers!

We purchased our historic building from a Church of the Brethren congregation in 1987. During the week the building is used by a variety of groups-a music school, a dance group, and a couple of 12-step recovery groups.

2. Who We Are Today

Since its beginning the congregation has grown from a handful of people to its present size, about 110 people. We have started a variety of ministries in the city, such as a voluntary service unit, an asylum seekers’ ministry, and a Ten Thousand Villages store. We take part in some of the programs and services of the ecumenical and interfaith groups in the Roland Park community. We also sponsor regular service trips to places of special need. In addition, we support mission work in many parts of the world.

Like many city churches, North Baltimore is a diverse group-culturally, spiritually, politically, and theologically. Although “Mennonite” might bring to mind images of rural people in horses and buggies, our people are more comfortable in cars or on public transit. We are more likely to be found working in offices, hospitals, law offices or classrooms than on farms.

What we share in common is a desire to know and serve Jesus Christ, who laid down his life for us and calls us to lay down our lives for each other. Mennonites share many beliefs in common with other Christians: a belief in God as Trinity; in the Bible as God’s unique revelation; in the new birth in which Jesus forgives us and gives us a powerful new life; and in the local church as the gathering of God’s people in the world. Mennonites carry a deep commitment to a life of service, nonviolence and the way of peace in following Jesus. As one person has said, “When Jesus said ‘Love your enemies’, we believe he meant what he said and was talking to us!”

Whether you are full of faith or full of questions, there is a place for you here. Join us for worship; stick around after for food and conversation; come as you are, and expect that if you stay you will be changed by the living God!

We have Christian Education classes for ages 3+ every Sunday morning at 9:30am.  Our Worship Service is held every Sunday at 10:30am.  And we have several Fellowship Groups who meet throughout the week for Bible Study, discussion, and friendship.  Please let our community be your community!
